THE EDDISBURY EXCAVATION 19th July and 13th August
We are going to undertake four excavation trenches on Eddisbury Hill for four weeks between 19th July and 13th August. The intention will be to re-excavate trenches through the ramparts and one of the entrances that were originally opened up between 1936 and 1938 in order to re-expose the sections and recover charcoal samples for radiocarbon dating. Owing to the nature of the excavation we are anticipating a large number of interested volunteers and for this reason booking will be essential. Please register your interest by emailing DAN GARNER directly.
It is anticipated that there will be a high demand for places on the excavation and ideally we would like you to express a preference for a particular week(s) we will of course try to accommodate anyone.
Working days will be: Monday to Friday between 9:00am and 4:00pm.

1 week training opportunity: Geophysical Surveying at Peckforton - 16th - 20th August 2010
A second chance to learn more about the techniques and equipment involved in geophysical surveying will be provided by another training week for volunteers near Beeston Castle between the Monday 16h and Friday 20th August. The training can be delivered over a single day and will involve both resistivity and magnetometry techniques. We will be targeting a possible prehistoric enclosure adjacent to Peckforton Mere.
We will only be able to cater for a maximum of 10 people per day so booking is essential.
Opportunity for Cheshire Schools - subsidised archaeology experience: Book now for a session in the mock dig!!
Cheshire Outdoor Education Service in partnership with Habitats and Hillforts is offering the opportunity to be involved in a new and exciting outdoor educational experience. Initially this workshop will be offered free of charge for a limited number of schools. We have created a replica archaeological dig based on the remains of an Iron Age round house
The dig is set in the grounds of Burwardsley Outdoor Education Centre close to the sites of Beeston Castle and Maiden Castle both sites of Iron Age hill forts and settlements.
The resource offers the opportunity to use the environment of the Sandstone ridge its flora and fauna in conjunction with the archaeological dig to provide a Cross Curricular Skills Based Teaching approach to sessions at the centre. Groups will take over the operation of the archaeological dig and all that entails, they will have responsibility for the excavation, identification and recording of artefacts removed from the ground.
Complete replica artefacts will be available to aid children with their identification along with interpretation boards. The activity process of excavation is the basic vehicle which will allow the development of teaching sessions which may include writing (reports, creative writing, poetry) mathematics, history and geography.
The resource will allow schools to work with the Outdoor Education Service to develop an activity session to suit their particular needs.
If you would like to discuss this opportunity further please contact Martin Kirkman.
